This has a 1.4L Turbo MultiAir Engine; not the more common 2.4L.
This vehicle would ideally need to be seen by someone familiar with these engines as our service manuals don't even include the 1.4L variant, only the 2.4L. Valves are controlled by the MultiAir block hydraulically using oil pressure.
This is likely not a simple, easy-to-fix issue; price has been reduced and this will be sold as-is or sent to auction.
